The surrounding area.      El Valle is a typical rural area where the past is very much present. It is not unusual to see the locals scything their fields in the old fashioned way and wearing the clogs with small stilts that are typical to Asturias. It is an area of small holdings and very close to the properties is Lucy’s small holding where if you so wish you can go for fresh eggs and vegetables in season.

Just behind the property is an area called Monte Areo which is an area of enormous historic value with the Dolmens from the Neolithic age. There is a small exhibition of the dolmens in the local social centre and it is also possible to get a guided tour although everyone is free to go and investigate for themselves.

Just along the road from the properties there are various traditional washing points where in times gone by the women from the village used to take their daily wash to beat against the stones and rinse in the water that gushed down from the mountains. In recent times these have been restored to their former glory and depending on how many stones you can gauge the amount of villagers that used each of these points. There are also various water fountains where people today still claim the water to be of a high standard and so come to collect in bottles for use at home.

There are various important churches and chapels in the area which have also been on various restoration projects and are well worth the visit. The small chapel of the Remedios still attracts hundreds of local pilgrims to its annual ‘romeria/mass’ in the field in front of it and is a jolly day with traditional dancers and pinicking as well as a solemn mass outdoors. From the view point on Monte Areo you can see the house of the famous asturian writer Clarin and around this house you can do several commenrative walking routes which help you explore this area. In the local fishing village of Candas they also hold a market annually to remember this author and it is full of people dressed as in his day (18th century) and selling local produce and artesan goods. Candas is also the host to a variety of fiestas during the year starting in February with Carnival where the whole village participates in a fancy dress competition and carrying on at Easter with religious procession host of fiestas for sardines, patron saints, outdoor concerts, films, markets etc.

The Monte also boasts an impressive viewpoint of the whole coastline. There are many walking and bicycle routes leading from the viewpoint and you can walk for as long or as short as you wish. There is also a model airplane strip alongside a large barbecue and picnic area (including low stone barbecues for making paella).

Beaches  Asturias has a wonderful and sometimes wild coastline with many beaches within very easy access. If you like town beaches then the long beaches of Gijon or Salinas are 15 minutes drive. If you would like a beach in a small fishing village then Candas is the nearest again 15 minutes drive. If it is a more wild type of beach you are looking for then the beaches of Xago or Verdicio are favourites with surfers and families alike, both have beach bars and parking facilities.

Fishing villages  The village of Candas is the nearest and has a wide variety of seafood restaurants many offering a wonderful choice of seafood and fish of all types and are very good value for money. The locals accompany this with the local cider which the waiters pour for you from shoulder height into your glass. Other fishing villages within easy distance are Luanco and Cudillero and Tazones all very pretty and also serving a large variety of seafood.

Food   Asturias is renowned throughout spain for its great cuisine. Typical to the area is the bean chorizo salted ham and black pudding stew ‘Fabada’ but that is not all it has to offer. Seafood abounds and is always fabulously fresh. Try the Charlana on the banks of the river in Aviles, it usually has a set menu to be able to try a true fish feast at very reasonable prices. The sardine fiesta in Candas is not to be missed as thousands of kilos of sardines are grilled and served from street tables to restaurants. However, if you are more of a meat eater there are many ‘parrilla’ restaurants, these specialize in grilling meat for you in the restaurants on enormous grills, ribs, huge steaks or lamb done in the traditional way on large rotating grills. The region is also a huge cheese producer and has a wide choice from ‘Cabrales’ a blue cheese from the mountains around Cabrales or smoked cheeses goats sheeps cheeses etc, the list is endless. If you are a little more adventurous try octopus and potatoes a dish originally from the next region Galicia but widely eaten here in Asturias and very tasty, washed down with a light white wine served from a jug and in small drinking bowls, Ribeiro.

There are three major cities in Asturias and all three are within very easy reach of the properties. Oviedo is the capital and declared World Heritage City due to its many Romanic architectural sites. Aviles has always been the most forgotten by town planners and as such is now able to boast a large area of newly restored old parts of town which are buzzing with life and well worth the visit, have a coffee in the lovely Plaza de España and watch the world go by. Aviles has a lively farmers market on Mondays and is full of local producers selling their wares in a lovely setting. Gijon is the seaside town which has some good shopping, restaurants and sights to see. The new Aquarium is one of the new places to visit but it is only one of many places of cultural interest to go.

Guest from francornio rural in Grado on market day.

Inland villages   Pravia is well worth the visit and is within 20 minutes drive. It is a market town with a busy market on Thursday morning. It is the site of the original kings of Asturias in 938 and is such of historical value. Grado is also another market town holding its busy farmers market on a Sunday which is useful as there is no Sunday shopping in Spain so as the majority of shops are open in the village due to the market it is useful for stocking up on forgotten items. Grado is within 25 minutes drive.

Walking routes    Asturias is well known for its many tracks and trails. Whether you wish to walk along coastline, up mountain trails, in the hills and valleys or follow the banks of a babbling brook, here you have many routes to choose from.
Here are some of the more well known but information on this abounds and really depends on each person to decide which trail they wish to take.

Outdoor Activities   There are many different sports and activities to try and it is a region fully set up to cater for all types of interests from skiing in one of the two ski resorts closest to us , Pajares or San Isidro. Courses in snowboarding or skiing are available. Horseriding is another favourite with the wild coast line to be explored what better way than on horseback and very near to the property there is a ranch which caters for all levels and takes you out on excursions.

Maybe you would like to try your hand at paddling down the lovely river Nalon in a kayak/canoe the nearby village of Pravia provides the set off point with monitors to help you along, picnic lunches are provided for your stops along the way. http://www.skimosport.com/

Surfing also has a big following here in the area as a couple of its beaches have a mention in the surfer’s guide to recommended beaches to practice this sport one of them being Verdicio and the other Xago. Again courses can be found to help the beginner get started. Afterwards chat about the waves with the surfers in the wakkiki beach bar on Xago beach.

All in all the central part of Asturias has much to offer the diner, walker, fisherman, museum goer, general sightseer etc pretty much everyone really, once you visit the region you will wonder how its managed to stay a secret for so long. And the best kept secret of all is El Valle and the beautiful valley and hills here so close to everything but yet completely in a rural setting.

View from top of monte areo along whole valley and coast line towards Candas and Luanco.

Some shots of El Valle and surroundings at different times and seasons.

Neolithic burial site and monte areo in the snow.

The Crystal beach made up as a result of dumping from a glass factory many years ago. Fascinating little bay which attracts many divers for the clarity of the water there and the good underwater fishing.

Sculpture in Aviles the symbol for the town designed by local artist.

in all Asturias has many wonderful experiences to enjoy and Fancornio Rural is set in the heart of it all for easy access to everything. __________________________________________________________________________
